On Friday 15th March 2024, 14 employees from Kimberly-Clark joined Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies project to plant 450 canopy trees and shrubs in a reserve in The Ponds in the Blacktown Local Government Area.
Natural Resources Manager Esteban Zepeda and Creating Canopies Project Officer Laura Parent led the day.
This day was part of Kimberly-Clark’s Corporate Purpose Day. Their purpose is ‘Better Care. Better World’ and they chose to focus on two areas – community and the environment. Greater Sydney Landcare hosted two corporate volunteering events for Kimberly-Clark – this one to plant trees and a bush restoration workshop on the Lane Cove River.
Despite some rains, the crew from Kimberly-Clark were able to add 450 trees and shrubs to the reserve. The plant species all belong to the endangered vegetation community of Cumberland Plain—one of the most at risk ecological communities in the Greater Sydney region, with only 9% remaining in highly fragmented patches.
The plants installed come from regional seed gathered and grown by Blacktown Nursery. Blacktown City Council partnered with Greater Sydney Landcare to host over ten Creating Canopies tree planting events in their Local Government Area in 2023 alone.
Making an Impact For Nature
Kimberly-Clark volunteers saw first-hand how even small patches of vegetation can support native wildlife. During the day as they observed stick insects, parrots and even a Blue Banded Bee!
The enthusiasm and dedication of the Kimberly-Clark corporate volunteers reflected in the quality of the planting, with all the plants being installed correctly, given a big drink and staked for maintenance and monitoring purposes. A fun day was had by all and a great amount of work to benefit nature completed.
