Saturday 18th May 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team hosted a planting at Carara Reserve in West Ryde, in the City of Ryde Local Government Area.

Despite the brisk morning, 11 enthusiastic volunteers gathered to plant 350 native trees and shrubs, to contribute to the area’s biodiversity.

The variety of native tree species planted included majestic gum trees (Angophora and Eucalyptus), turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera), wattle (Acacia), bottlebrush (Callistemon) and Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus).

Shrubs planted included Coffee Bush (Breynia oblongifolia), Australian Indigo (Indigofera australis), Rice Flower (Ozothamnus diosmifolius), Large Mock-Olive (Notelaea longifolia), Elderberry Panax (Polyscias sambucifolia) and other native shrubs carefully chosen for their suitability to the area.

The day was led by Natural Resources Manager Bryce Doyle (pictured above) and Bush Regenerator Rhiannon Beaton. Their passion and knowledge made the experience both educational and enjoyable for everyone involved.

A special thanks goes out to the City of Ryde for providing this site for Creating Canopies’ planting efforts.

This collaboration follows our successful event in April 2024, where Creating Canopies teamed up with the city of Ryde and KPMG corporate volunteers to plant trees in Macquarie Park.

After planting 350 native trees and shrubs at Carara Reserve in West Ryde, volunteers and Greater Sydney Landcare staff enjoyed a delicious catered lunch of sandwiches and brownies.
